Volunteer opportunities on the Thai-Burmese border with community based organisations.
Karen Women’s Organization (KWO)
The Karen Women's Organisation is a community-based organization of Karen women working in development and relief for refugees in the refugee camps on the Thai-Burmese border together with Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and women inside Burma. KWO focuses largely on women’s issues by promoting gender equalities in society and encouraging more women’s participation in politics.
KWO needs one volunteer for its Mae Sot office. Before KWO accepts the volunteer, we need to know more information, such as how long you can stay, interests and skills. Requirements for volunteers are: Women, aged above 23, an interest in Burma, refugees and women, flexible and willing to learn other cultures.
Skills required: computer skills, including Page maker, Excel and Microsoft Word, writing skills, editing reports, and assistance with writing project proposals.
If you would like to help and get involved or volunteer for KWO please contact; kwo@loxinfo.co.th, P.O. Box 19, Mae Sariang 58110, Mae Hong Son Province, Thailand, http://www.karenwomen.org/
Karen Human Rights Group
Karen Human Rights Group (KHRG) is eager for volunteers if you are willing to stay a few months, don't need to be paid much, and either a) have special skills we need, or b) are willing to assist our full time office staff on important tasks for which we never have enough people or time. We are a small and flexible organisation, which allows people to make an important contribution. You will not be working in the field with villagers (this is done by Karen field researchers) but we think you will enjoy working with our office staff on very fulfilling projects and also have an interesting educational experience learning about the Karen situation through our work and the work of other local groups.
Some of the special skills we could use right now are:
- IT expertise, i.e. expertise in coding/implementing PHP, Java, HTML, database design and maintenance, local area networking
- fundraising skills and experience
- expertise in media advocacy
- ability to teach basic and intermediate computer usage (e.g. Windows, Word, Excel, email, website maintenance)
- qualified teacher in intermediate/advanced written English
We are looking to improve our operations and our capacity in all of the above areas. Volunteers with other skills may also be required depending on our ongoing projects.
