Students and young people led the democracy uprising
in 1988 when thousands of people took to the streets calling for
democracy and an end to dictatorship. Many of their leaders remain
in prison. An estimated 800 students are still in prisons around
Burma because of their involvement in peaceful student demonstrations
and political movements. In Burma student unions are illegal, universities
have been closed more than they have been open and student leaders
have been imprisoned, tortured and killed. Students in Burma have
led the fight for justice. Their courage should be an inspiration
to us all.
The Burma Campaign Student Network works with student groups and individuals all
over the UK to help the campaign for human rights and democracy
in Burma.
Some of our current campaigns include:
Letter writing campaign for the release of student
political prisoners
Campaigning againt French oil giant TOTAL Oil
Campaigning on the tourism boycott, including
targeting Lonely Planet
Environmental issues
The Burma Campaign Student Network has groups at universities,
colleges and schools. Membership is free, as are most resources,
although we do encourage groups to subscribe to the network. We
can provide campaign packs and ideas, resources and information,
speakers and opportunities to attend national and local demonstrations.
Please get in touch if you’d like to know where your nearest
group is or if you are interested in setting up your own group.
