During August and September 2007, thousands of Buddhist monks took to the streets across Burma, marching in peaceful protest against the military dictatorship. The protests were the largest public demonstrations since 1988. The military regime launched a violent crackdown against the monks and other non-violent protestors. They have beaten and arrested thousands of people, and reportedly killed at least 200 people.
