Ban Ki-moon – Go To Burma!

Dear Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon I am writing to call on you to personally take the lead in UN efforts to restore democracy to Burma. For almost twenty years the regime ruling Burma has oppressed its own people and defied the international community. UN envoys have visited the country 35 times, yet not one visit has resulted in any democratic reform in Burma. In fact, the human rights situation has deteriorated massively since the first visit by a UN envoy. More than 1,800 political prisoners, many of whom routinely tortured, the systematic use of rape as a weapon of war, more child soldiers than any other country, and as the Special Rapporteur has reported, the deliberate targeting of civilians in Eastern Burma, where more than 3,000 villages have been destroyed in the past 12 years and more than half a million people are internally displaced. This crisis is arguably one of the worst human rights and humanitarian crises in the world, and warrants your personal engagement to finally bring a solution to the long-suffering people of Burma. The process of UN envoys and polite requests for reform has failed. You should ask the Security Council for their support in the form of a binding resolution requiring change in Burma, and visit Burma to deliver a message to the regime that they can no longer continue to defy the international community.
