Kachin State Day Event

Kachin State was founded on January 10th 1948. Although it was then, and remains today, a very diverse region within the Burmese state, there was a particular significance for Kachin people in the establishment of Kachin State and in Kachin State Day. The purpose of this seminar and community gathering is to consider these initial expectations about what Kachin State and Kachin State Day meant for Kachin National living in Kachin State, and how these meanings have changed over time. In recent years, a large Kachin community has established itself in the UK and this meeting is also an opportunity for them to talk about their present situation, and their concerns and hopes for the future.

Programme:
1pm – 2pm: Presentations by Dr. Mandy Sadan (Lecturer in the History of South East Asia, SOAS), Mr. L. Goon Tawng (Chairman- KNO-UK), Mr Ashley South (Researcher and Consultant, ANU, Sydney)
2pm – 2.45pm: Q&A session and community led discussion
2.45pm – 3pm: Tea and sale of raffle tickets
3pm – 4pm: Demonstrations of Kachin cultural performance (come and learn how to dance the Manau!)
4pm – Raffle drawn
