Global Day of Action on 2nd anniversary of the breaking of a 17-year ceasefire in Kachin State

07 Jun 2013

The Kachin National Organisation and Burma Campaign UK are holding a demonstration as part of a Global Day of Action to mark the 2nd anniversary of the breaking of a 17-year ceasefire in Kachin State.

Date:  Friday 7 June, 2013

Time: 12:00 - 13:00

Place: British Foreign Commonwealth Office (FCO)
        King Charles Street
        London, SW1A 2AH

During the military attacks the Burmese Army has been targeting civilians, which constitutes a war crime. The human right abuses committed by the Burmese Army could also qualify as crimes against humanity. More than 100,000 civilians have had to escape from their homes to refugee camps and many Kachins suffer from human rights violation on a daily basis, including: extra judicial killing, rape of women and children, arbitrary execution, torture, forced labour, bombing, burning and looting of villages. Additionally, the Burmese government continues to block the access to humanitarian aid for those in need.

These attacks on civilians cannot be tolerated and it needs to stop!

On 7th June we will be calling on the British government to take actions to stop the Burmese government attacking their own civilians and highlights those human rights abuses especially the issue of rape and sexual violence against women and children. We will also call on the British government to pressure the Burmese government for the pursuit of political settlement that can guarantee lasting peace for ethnic people that can only be achieved through the establishment of a federal democratic Burma.
