The Burmese community in London hold prayers for victims of London bomb blasts.

22 Jul 2005

The Burmese community in London will hold prayers for the victims and families of those who died in the bombs in London on 7 July. The prayers and chants, Paritta (Suttara), will be led by Burmese Buddhist monks at their monastery in north London. The ceremony will be held on 24th July 2005.

The Burmese community are holding this ceremony in solidarity with all those affected by the bombs in London. 7 July is a poignant date for the Burmese community. On 7 July 1962, Burmese students at Rangoon University were gunned down by soldiers. They were protesting against the military coup led by General Ne Win in March 1962. Over 100 students died in the attack and the Rangoon Student University building was destroyed by bomb blasts. This Sunday’s ceremony will also remember the Burmese students who died in this attack.
