Archbishop Tutu Backs Global Arms Embargo on Burma

Archbishop Desmond Tutu, writing today in The Guardian newspaper in the UK, has called for a global arms embargo against Burma, accusing countries supplying arms to Burma of complicity with the atrocities being committed in the country.

Tutu also called for a Commission of Inquiry into crimes against humanity and war crimes being committed in Burma, saying; “Burma’s generals are criminals, and must be treated as such.”

The Burma Campaign UK warmly welcomed the call to action by Desmond Tutu.

“The time is long overdue for a global arms embargo on Burma,” said Zoya Phan, International Coordinator of Burma Campaign UK. “We hope that countries will come out in support of an embargo, helping to build the global consensus needed to persuade the Security Council to implement it.”
