Vera Baird QC MP welcomes UNSC Debate
Vera Baird QC MP, co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Burma, said:
I am delighted that Burma is being discussed at the UN Security Council with the support of the British Government.
The all-party parliamentary group on Burma and the British Burmese community has been energetically lobbying the Government to help put this issue on the agenda of the Security Council.
As a regime guilty of genocide, international drug trafficking and, according to press reports, seeking nuclear technology - it is clear this is a matter for the UN Security Council.
I hope this is a first step to taking action that will compel the regime to release Aung San Suu Kyi, allow full access to humanitarian organisations and to begin a meaningful transfer to democracy.
Burma is an important issue for all British political parties, with 197 MPs having signed a recent Parliamentary motion calling for UN action.
