Gordon Brown Pledges to Push for Tougher EU Sanctions

Prime Minister Gordon Brown today spoke by telephone with Zoya Phan, Campaigns Officer at Burma Campaign UK, and pledged to push for stronger sanctions by the European Union.

“I am greatly encouraged by Gordon Brown’s pledge to take action against the regime,” said Zoya Phan. “The EU promised there would be consequences if the regime used violence. Now people are being killed on the streets. The EU must act quickly, or the regime will see inaction as a green light to continue killing.”

The Burma Campaign UK is calling for targeted economic sanctions, including an investment ban, a ban on financial transactions, an asset freeze, and a ban on imports of timber and gems.
