NLD Leader U Win Tin Video Message For Aung San Suu Kyi

18 Jun 2010

A video birthday message to Aung San Suu Kyi from National League for Democracy leader U Win Tin has been smuggled out of Burma.

In the message U Win Tin, who spent 19 years in jail as a political prisoner, describes how he misses Aung San Suu Kyi, and how he hopes she will soon be free to lead the people again.

The message is one of many being posted of the British Foreign Office News on Burma Facebook page, where messages are being collected from around the world, and which will be given to Aung San Suu Kyi’s representatives in Burma.

Aung San Suu Kyi will spend her 65th birthday in detention on Saturday 19th June. She has spent almost 15 years in detention since 1989. The exact time she has spent in detention will be 14 years and 238 days. The United Nations has repeatedly ruled that her detention breaks international law.

“U Win Tin is risking imprisonment by releasing this message for Aung San Suu Kyi, but outside Burma we have the freedom to leave messages of support, so please do show your support,” said Wai Hnin, Campaigns Officer at Burma Campaign UK. Wai Hnin’s own father, Mya Aye, is a political prisoner in Burma, currently serving a 65 year jail term, and being denied urgently needed medical treatment. “I hope the bravery of Aung San Suu Kyi, U Win Tin, and all those struggling for democracy and human rights, will inspire people around the world to support our struggle for freedom.”
