Demonstrations, concerts, performances, conferences, seminars, protests and numerous other events are taking place in more than 22 cities around the world to mark the celebration of Aung San Suu Kyi’s 65th birthday on Saturday June 19, 2010.
Aung Sun Suu Kyi, icon of democracy, freedom and non-violence, is still being detained by the military dictatorship in Burma, having spent almost 15 of the last 21 years in detention. Campaigners worldwide are calling for the unconditional release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in Burma.
Events are taking place in London, Dublin, Taiwan, Paris, Strasbourg, Belgium, all around Sweden, Barcelona, Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen, Kristiansund, Toronto, New York, Washington DC, Sydney, Auckland, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Makati City, New Delhi, and Davao City.
In the UK events include a protest outside the Burmese Embassy, an event at a Burmese Buddhist Monastery, a Burmese community event, and an event in the British Parliament. In the USA 340 groups are holding ‘arrest yourself’ events. In the European Parliament there will be a performance of the Lady of Burma play.
“People around the world have joined forces to show their support for Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma,” said Zoya Phan, International Coordinator of Burma Campaign UK. “We need our governments to listen and take action. They must work together and with the UN to pressure the generals to agree to negotiations with Burma’s democracy movement.”
