Burma’s dictatorship is planning to hold fake elections on 7 November 2010. The election is part of the regime’s much criticised “road-map to democracy”. The entire process is a sham. The dictatorship’s election laws have prevented Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy from participating. Even if the elections were free and fair, they will bring in a constitution designed to maintain dictatorship.
The United Nations has called on the dictatorship to enter into genuine dialogue with the NLD and ethnic groups. However, rather than try and make that happen, the UN and many governments have tried in vain to reform the generals’ plans. They have completely failed to secure any concession.
UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon should stop trying to persuade Burma’s generals to reform elections designed to maintain their rule. Instead the United Nations should renew efforts to force Burma’s generals to enter into dialogue with Aung San Suu Kyi and genuine ethnic representatives.
The UN Secretary General, General Assembly and Security Council have all called for this dialogue, but have not done enough to pressure the generals into dialogue.
Please take action now and urge UN Secretary General to take the lead on Burma and to renew efforts to pressure Burma’s generals to enter into genuine dialogue.
