Survivors survey flattened buildings in the Irrawaddy Delta after Cyclone Nargis, May 2008

When Cyclone Nargis struck in May 2008 it destroyed the fragile buildings in the Irrawaddy delta. In this image the survivors survey the flattened buildings.

Cyclone Nargis struck Burma in May 2008 causing devastating damage in the Irrawaddy Delta and widespread damage in Rangoon. The military regime made the situation far worse by failing to warn the population that the cyclone was coming and then blocked international aid from being delivered to the more than 3 million people that were directly affected by the cyclone. It is estimated that 140,000 people were killed by the storm.
