Scenes of devastation left by Cyclone Nargis in May 2008

Homes, livestock and equipment were destroyed by Cyclone Nargis, which struck the Irrawaddy delta in May 2008. This image shows some of the destruction in the area.

Cyclone Nargis struck Burma in May 2008 causing devastating damage in the Irrawaddy Delta and widespread damage in Rangoon. The military regime made the situation far worse by failing to warn the population that the cyclone was coming and then blocked international aid from being delivered to the more than 3 million people that were directly affected by the cyclone. It is estimated that 140,000 people were killed by the storm.
