Background Information
On the 15th of August 2007 the regime raised fuel prices dramatically, sparking off the biggest uprising since 1988. The regime responded with a brutal military crackdown. The regime’s troops attacked crowds and monasteries, killing peaceful protestors and arresting over 6,000 people including an estimated 1,400 monks. It is difficult to estimate the number killed during the crackdown but it is estimated to be up to 200.
