Aung San Suu Kyi, Burma’s democracy leader and Nobel Peace laureate, has come to symbolise the struggle of Burma’s people to be free. She has spent more than 15 years in detention, most of it under house arrest, but was released from her current third period of detention on 13th November 2010.

The international community should use the release of Aung San Suu Kyi as an opportunity to apply pressure on the dictatorship to enter into genuine dialogue. This briefing provides recommendations for action from the international community.
Since her release in November 2010, Aung San Suu Kyi has had countless meetings with foreign diplomats and journalists and her video messages have been smuggled out of the country to be played around the world, including the Brighton Festival, the 2011 Reith Lectures and an address to the US Congress.
