An Urgent Appeal From Rangoon – Burma
“We are living in hell. Please help us.”
Despite the regime’s attempts to cut off communication, we received a message from Rangoon. They want the world to know what is going on in Burma, and appealed for more international pressure.
“Everyone is so afraid. People are scared to go out into the streets, most shops are shut. The world must know what is going on, we need international pressure. If the pressure continues the regime can’t survive. Maybe a few months, but it can’t survive if the pressure continues.”
The Burma Campaign UK is here to deliver that support, to pressure the international community to take action against the regime in Burma. But we can’t do it without your help. Please can you spare a donation today, to help us draft in resources at this time of crisis:
In the past week:
- We have received more than 600 calls a day from journalists.
- We have made sure that news from Burma has reached the television programmes and newspapers you have been reading.
- We are pressuring governments to impose targeted economic sanctions, and push for a global arms embargo against the regime.
- We are briefing the British and other governments on the best response to the crisis to ensure this moment in history means real and lasting change for Burma.
And we are having an impact. The British Prime Minister Gordon Brown personally called us and pledged to push for strong economic sanctions by the European Union. Our message is to not let the junta continue to get away with slaughtering its own population. We are acting as a voice for the people in Burma who are channelling their pleas to the world through to us.
But we are a small organisation, desperately short of funds, and with only a handful of people in our office. We are struggling to deliver the support that the people of Burma are asking us for. Our staff have been sleeping overnight in the office and literally spending every waking moment dealing with this crisis. We urgently need your help right now because a donation today can help us provide that support - without you we cannot afford to keep up the momentum.
Two days ago another person in Rangoon told us “All night long I could hear people screaming and crying out for help. Soldiers were beating everyone they found. We are living in hell. Please help us.”
Please donate as much as you can today. We can help them - with your support.
